Reviews:
UNDERGROUND PUNK SUPPORT (NETHERLANDS)
To describe this I can say; Negative. Negative What? Negative Approach, Negative FX and Negative Gain!! This modern Boston Area-band grips back to the style of those similarly named bands. Fast, aggressive but 'catchy' pure Hardcore with the raw vocals especially close to Negative Approach. Despite the album-title all the lyrics are in English. No trendy Los Crudos or Latin-American influences, just plain 100% old styled raw US HARDCORE in capitals. Very good and one of the American bands that I want to see live in Holland now that I have seen Out Cold and Neighbors. Smashing! Ohh, and LP on piss-yellow vinyl. CD with more bonus tracks.
SUBURBAN VOICE #44
If you're one of those people disillusioned with the state of hardcore in recent years, thinking it's been given over to the realm of blustery metal bands and their kick-boxing minions, give this album a listen to restore your faith. Last In Line may be fairly obvious in their influences and happy to mine the early 80s hardcore motherlode, but so what? These guys play with a dead-on tightness and aggressiveness, flying through their songs with an unstoppable power and spirit. Seamless transitions from thrash to mosh, er, circle pit parts and back again. DJ's vocals are appropriately bellicose and backed up by tow blazing guitars, throttle-shot bass and kick-ass drumming. Lyrics that have a point, whether about money going for sports teams instead of improving education, the drudgery of the 9-5 existence or aggressive foreign policy, but not taking themselves too seriously--not with a song about classic horror movies ("Crimson Screens") or their cover of GG Allin's "You Hate Me And I Hate You." One of 'em has "negative" in his e-mail address and the two best-known Negative bands (FX and Approach) are definitely a big part of the equation here. Damn near as perfect a HC record as you'll hear all year. Don't miss their earlier 7" either.
THE NOISE #207
I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of actually reviewing an LP, but here it is in all it's splendor: Last In Line's latest LP. This LP (on clear vinyl no less) has all the grit, spit, and shit that hardcore thrives on. At the risk of sounding like one of those annoying analog luddites, this album would NEVER have worked on CD. The drums are punchy, the guitars are edgy, the bass has big hairy balls, and you can feel DJ's vocal chords shred with every "Fuck You" he chokes out. There is, of course, the obligatory GG Allin cover, "You Hate Me & I Hate You," but the band rocks out on tunes such as "Sore Thumbs," "A Little Common Courtesy Won't Kill You (But I Just Might)," and quite possibly the first hardcore tune I've ever heard sung in Italian, "Pinno Raffredda." If that weren't enough, there's a lyric sheet so you can scream along with your fist in the air in the privacy of your own home or office. I must say that the lyrics are a howl! This is the way this band was meant to be heard, so all you headbangers go out and get a turntable and toss this one on!
MASS MOVEMENT #8 (WALES)
Proper old style HC from MA that rolls over ya like an out of control freight train. Last In Line play HC at it's finest and fastest, the way it was meant to be, packed with aggression, direct and straight to the point. Drift away and the glory days come flooding right back. This is the kind of super-charged HC that pits were invented for and meant to celebrate. Seems that I'm not the only one who remembers how good things used to be, and along with bands like Kill Your Idols, Last In Line are out to set the record straight. What we once were, we can be again. Bless you guys, you've made an old man happy.
HEARTATTACK #28
This is a great LP. The music reminds me of a cross between old Boston stuff like Negative FX and New York's Judge. The songs are angry, powerful, and catchy (sometimes catchy is the most important ingredient in this recipe!) Old style hardcore done just right. Really good. The lyrics are smart, the sound is great, and I loved listening to this. Totally recommended, and two thumbs up from me.
MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #211
Fuck yeah, this record rules! This is blazing fast hardcore that screams "Hey it is 1982, so fuck you!" OK I made that up, but I think you get the idea. Think Negative FX except it is almost 20 years later and you will start to get the idea of where this band is coming from. The music rules, the lyrics rule, the recording rules and the cover art rules. How can you go wrong? Fuck, they even do a GG Allin cover! God damn Sam, buy this record!!!
SLUG & LETTUCE #65
Ever put on a record and say out loud "Holy Shit!"?? Well, that's what I said when I first heard this, and so will you. Last In Line come at you with an all out hardcore assault that will leave you circle pitting in your room. Totally early 80s style hardcore punk rock that is fast, aggressive, pissed off and even catchy too. This is very comparable to Negative Approach, especially the vocals. And it's not a cheesy re-hash of 80s hardcore nostalgia either. This is very original, while holding true to the old school. This is probably my favorite record this year.
GAGNAUGAÐ #2 (ICELAND)
Fokk hvað þessir gaurar eru reiðir og pirraðir. Yes! Þetta er bara FUCK YOU í allar áttir. Undir venjulegum kringumstæðum væri þetta kannski of langt en hafa ber í huga að þessi plata safnar saman lögum. Nýjustu lögin (1-13) L'Esercito Del Morto (sem eru öll brilliant) voru tekin upp 2000. Lög 14-22 voru tekin upp 99 og svo 23-25 árið 98. Ég veit ekki abnennilega ástæðuna af hverju þessi 3 stúdíósessjon er hér á einum disk. Ég vona að Last In Line séu ekki hættir.
